What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a gentle and effective hands-on approach to healthcare, based on the principle that the way your body moves influences how it functions. More than just a series of techniques, osteopathy is a philosophy of health—one that acknowledges the body's natural ability to adapt, recover, and maintain balance. However, when the body's resources for coping are overwhelmed, osteopathy can help restore harmony and function.

Osteopaths diagnose and treat structural stresses and strains that may be interfering with health. While osteopathy is well known for helping with musculoskeletal issues such as back, neck, and joint pain, it can also support a wide range of concerns in babies, children, and adults.

What Do Osteopaths Treat?

Osteopaths treat the whole person, not just the symptoms. The cause of pain or dysfunction often originates elsewhere in the body, meaning no two osteopathic treatments are the same. We work to understand and address the underlying cause of a problem rather than simply treating the symptoms.

Common conditions osteopathy can help with include:

  • Back, neck, and joint pain

  • Sports injuries

  • Muscle and ligament strains

  • Hip and knee problems

  • Arthritis

  • Trapped nerves

  • Headaches

What to Expect

After an initial examination, your osteopath will discuss treatment options and work with you to create a personalised treatment plan. This may involve several visits, and in some cases, further tests or referrals to another healthcare professional.

Treatment may begin at your first appointment, and while there may be mild discomfort afterward, this usually settles within 24 hours. Medical acupuncture can also be incorporated into your treatment if appropriate.

“Osteopaths are highly trained professionals skilled in diagnosing health issues, including those that may require further investigation. The first visit to an osteopath will include questions about current symptoms and medical history. All information will be treated as confidential in accordance with the standards of practice set out by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), May 2018.”
